At first, Pleasant thought that Jeremiah had decided against attending the pageant and told herself that she was disappointed for the children. But then when the program ended she had turned to greet a neighbor and seen him. In fact, he was watching her and he had not looked away when she met his gaze. Instead, he had pushed himself away from his position leaning against the wall and started working his way through the throng of parents and children toward her.

Her first instinct was to flee, as if somehow his approach represented some danger to her. But she found that she couldn’t move for the close quarters of benches and people and so she waited for him to reach her. Along the way, he paused to greet the Yoders and the Harnishers and others so that when he finally reached her and the twins, she had convinced herself that she had been mistaken to imagine that he had been watching her at all. He had simply made eye contact as any friend or neighbor might and she was a romantic fool.

“I’ll get your glasses from Rolf,” she told him and headed immediately for the front of the room where Lydia was surrounded by the excited participants of the program. She had to gain control of her emotions when it came to Jeremiah Troyer. In the weeks that had passed since the opening of his ice cream shop, she had fallen into the habit of being far too aware of his activities. At first she had told herself that she was only concerned about Rolf and that her son live up to his responsibilities. But Rolf had quickly settled into his new job and kept up with his schoolwork and chores at home as well.

Then she had tried convincing herself that they were in business together. She made the cones for his shop and it was only natural that she would be aware of when he might be coming to pick up the week’s order or drop off a payment for her father. But the truth was that she looked forward to those occasions as she might well have looked forward to some beau coming to call when she was younger.

No, the plain fact was that she was drawn to Jeremiah in a way that no woman of her age or station in life should be. She had permitted herself to fall back into the romantic foolishness that had been her undoing before she married Merle. Yes, her life these days was difficult and lonely, and she would not deny that having someone to share her many responsibilities with would be a blessing. But a companion only—not someone like Jeremiah whose very smile could set her heart racing.

When she reached Lydia and the children, she took out the case for the glasses and handed it to Rolf. “Don’t forget to say thank you,” she murmured as her son reluctantly removed the glasses and carefully laid them in the case. Then he looked up at someone standing behind her.
